A group of Malaysian businessmen is reported to be in Glasgow to hold talks about buying over well-known Scottish football club Rangers.Scottish newspaper Daily Record reported in its online edition – Record Sport – on Wednesday that the three Malaysian businessmen, purportedly led by Felda Director-General Datuk Faizoull Ahmad, were among the many foreign investors hoping to buy Glasgow Rangers, who have been financially hit in recent times.
The report stated that the “beleaguered Rangers hope to escape another financial collapse by inviting a Malaysian moneyman – who already owns a football club – to pump money into Ibrox”.
It also said that “the potential sugar daddy was given the full VIP treatment over a 48-hour visit to Glasgow as the crisis-hit club scrambled to stave off a second financial collapse in two-and-a-half years”.
Rangers play in the second tier of the Scottish Professional Football League. Their home ground is Ibrox Stadium in the south-west of the city.
Rangers have won more league titles and trebles than any other club in the world – winning the league 54 times, the Scottish Cup 33 times and the Scottish League Cup 27 times. They also achieved the treble in the same season seven times.
Rangers were also the first British club to reach a UEFA tournament final. They won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1972 after being runners-up twice in 1961 and 1967.
Rangers have a long-standing rivalry with Celtic and the two Glasgow clubs have been collectively known as the Old Firm since the late 19th century.
